On Saturday, I competed in the annual art contest at the North Carolina Comic Con…and I’m excited to say, I won second place! There were so many great artists in attendance from all over the state, and I am truly honored to have placed in the top three.
All entrants had one hour to produce a piece at the convention during the allotted time for judging. Each contestant was supplied with an 11×17 sheet of professional Strathmore comic art board but each artist was welcome to bring additional supplies to complete their entry (pens, brushes, ink, etc.).
Now in its fourth year (but only my second year attending), the N.C. Comicon returned to the Durham Convention Center with twice the exhibition space and much more to do. More than 100 publishers, dealers, artists and retailers occupied the main exhibition hall. This year’s events included panel discussions, art classes, costume contests, a special appearance by comedian and nerd culture icon Chris Hardwick, a film festival at the adjacent Carolina Theatre, and many other special events. My friends over at Ultimate Comics (Chapel Hill, NC) really did a great job organizing this event.
